Chapters 1 and 2: The Beginning and the End

The epigraph in Chapter 1 is of a postcard received by a friend of Chris. In this postcard, Chris says his goodbye and shows that he is aware of the possibility of dying during his trip. In Chapter 2, the epigraph describes how Chris carved "Jack London is king" into wood, followed by a quote from Jack London describing the wild and the feeling and wisdom it gives people.

The map shown at the beginning of Chapter 1 is of Alaska. It shows the different ranges throughout the state. In Chapter 2, there is a closer-up map of Alaska that shows the National Park boundary and where Chris was dropped off at the beginning of his expedition.

My assessment of Chris McCandless so far is that he seemed ignorant when he was on his way to the trails in Alaska. He was way under packed and unprepared, but maybe he didn't really care if he survived or not. He seemed like a strong-willed and stubborn guy with some interesting ideas. His SOS note surprised me because he sounded very scared and desperate, which is weird considering his attitude at the beginning of his trip.
